How Long Does Windshield Replacement Take?
The installation itself is 60-90 minutes. But safe drive-away time and ADAS calibration change the total. Here's what to actually plan for before you book.
Quick Answer: Total Time by Scenario
Phase-by-Phase Breakdown
Glass Removal
15-20 minThe old windshield is cut out using a cold knife or wire tool. All remaining urethane adhesive is removed from the pinchweld (the frame edge). Any rust or debris is cleaned and treated.
Frame Preparation
10-15 minThe pinchweld is inspected for damage, rust, and contamination. A primer is applied to promote adhesion. This step matters, skipping it is how leaks happen six months later.
Glass Installation
15-20 minNew urethane adhesive is applied to the pinchweld in a consistent bead. The new windshield is set in position, aligned, and held while the adhesive makes initial contact.
Safe Drive-Away Wait
30-60 minYou wait while the adhesive cures to a safe drive-away strength. In Memphis summer heat this is usually 30 minutes. In cooler weather or high humidity, closer to 60 minutes.
ADAS Calibration (if required)
30-45 minVehicles with forward cameras on the windshield need recalibration. Static calibration with a target board takes 20-30 minutes. Dynamic calibration (a road drive) adds another 15-20 minutes.
Leak Test & Sign-Off
5-10 minWe water-test the seal before releasing the vehicle. If the seal is good and calibration is verified, you drive away. If something's off, we fix it before you leave.
The Drive-Away Wait: Why It Matters
The urethane adhesive used to bond the windshield to your vehicle frame needs time to reach its minimum safe drive-away strength. This is a chemical curing process, not something we can rush.
"Safe drive-away strength" means the adhesive can keep the windshield in place if you have to do a hard stop or if the airbag deploys. A windshield installed but not cured properly can separate on impact, the exact scenario you need it to hold.
In practice, modern urethane adhesives reach safe drive-away strength in 30-60 minutes at normal temperatures. Memphis summer heat speeds this up (hot metal frame = faster cure). Cool fall or winter temperatures slow it down.
In summer (May-September), Memphis heat often pushes the cure to the fast end, 30 minutes is typical. In December-February, we may ask for a full 60 minutes to be safe. We'll tell you the estimated wait time when we start the job.
Does My Car Need ADAS Calibration?
If your vehicle has any of these features, it almost certainly has a forward-facing camera mounted on the windshield that requires recalibration after replacement:
- Lane Departure Warning / Lane Keeping Assist
- Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Forward Collision Warning
- Traffic Sign Recognition
Most vehicles built after 2018 have at least one of these systems. We verify whether calibration is required for your specific vehicle when you call for a quote.
If calibration is required, add 30-45 minutes to the total appointment time. We perform calibration on-site, no second trip to a dealer required.
Can I Wait at the Location During the Appointment?
For shop visits: yes. We have a waiting area. Bring something to do for an hour or two.
For mobile service: most customers go about their normal routine. The technician doesn't need you present during the installation. You just need to be available to hand over the keys at the start and pick them up when we're done.
Mobile appointments at your workplace are common, you work, we handle the car. One of the cleaner ways to get it done without losing your day.
Same-day appointments available in Memphis and across Shelby County. Insurance verified before we start, most customers pay $0.
