Windshield Work in Collierville: Roads, Weather and Coverage

Officially the Town of Collierville, this is the third largest municipality in Shelby County, with 51,324 people at the 2020 census. Jesse R. Collier laid it out in 1836, and it was chartered in 1850. Two Civil War battles were fought here in the autumn of 1863 as Confederate cavalry tried to cut the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, and the original settlement was destroyed. The town was rechartered in 1870 and rebuilt around the square that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990, and that Parade named the Best Main Street in America in 2014.

How Collierville drivers get around

The Bill Morris Parkway, State Route 385, enters Collierville from the west after its Forest Hill Irene Road interchange, then has exits at Houston Levee Road, Byhalia Road and US 72 before ending at I-269 on the Shelby and Fayette County line, which is also the boundary with Piperton. The stretch out to that interchange opened on August 23, 2007, and I-269 south of it opened on October 23, 2015. Other main routes are US 72 and State Route 57 on Poplar Avenue, State Route 175 along Byhalia Road, Collierville Road, South Houston Levee Road and East Shelby Drive, and State Route 205 on Collierville-Arlington Road.

FedEx, and Carrier's manufacturing facility, are among the employers that draw commuters, and a commute that starts on a quiet street, jumps onto 385 or I-269 and finishes on Poplar is exactly the pattern that collects chips. Freeway speed turns small debris into impact damage.

Heat, storms and cracks that spread

Collierville has a humid subtropical climate. Summers from late May to late September run hot and humid, roughly between 68 and 95 degrees, and spring is known locally as severe weather season, with more tornadoes, hail and damaging winds. Both seasons are hard on damaged glass. Hail creates fresh impact points, and in summer a chip in sun-baked glass meets cold air from the dash vents, a temperature difference that often turns a stable chip into a running crack.

The practical rule: get a chip looked at in spring before the first hot week, and do not blast the defroster or air conditioning straight onto a damaged windshield.

What a sound replacement includes

  • Glass marked as meeting FMVSS 205, whether dealer or aftermarket.
  • New moldings or clips where the old ones are single use.
  • A full urethane bead and the drive-away time the adhesive maker specifies.
  • Camera recalibration where the vehicle has a windshield-mounted camera.

A chip picked up on I-269 is often still small enough for windshield repair, which starts at $85. Once a crack runs, the job becomes a windshield replacement, and the replacement cost page shows what a sensor or camera adds.

The deductible, in Collierville terms

Tennessee is not a zero deductible glass state. Glass claims use your comprehensive deductible unless you bought a full glass endorsement, an add-on of roughly $30 to $60 a year.

Under Tenn. Code Ann. 56-7-1115 your insurer can deny a glass claim and ask for verified proof you paid the deductible, so a shop offering to waive it is putting your claim at risk, not theirs.

Repair or replace?

A small chip or short crack away from the edge and out of the driver's sightline is usually repairable, and many carriers cover repair without a deductible as a business choice. Long cracks and edge cracks mean replacement.

Ask any Collierville shop
  • Is the quote cash price or after insurance, and what is the deductible math?
  • Which glass brand, and is it OEM or aftermarket?
  • Is calibration included, and is it static, dynamic or both?
  • When is it safe to drive, given today's temperature?

Collierville Auto Glass: Common Questions

Will my insurance pay for a new windshield in Collierville?
Comprehensive coverage pays for glass broken by road debris, hail or a falling branch, minus your comprehensive deductible. Tennessee does not force insurers to waive that deductible. The way Collierville drivers get to zero is an optional full glass endorsement, roughly $30 to $60 a year, so check your declarations page for it before you file.
When is paying cash smarter than filing a claim?
When your deductible is close to or above the cash price. If the comprehensive deductible is $500 and a cash quote for your vehicle is lower, a claim pays nothing and still goes on your record. Get the cash quote first, then decide.
Can I be asked to prove I paid my deductible?
Yes. Tennessee Code section 56-7-1115 lets an insurer refuse a glass claim and require verified proof that the deductible was actually paid. Keep the paid invoice with the claim paperwork.
Do I need to go to a dealer for a Collierville windshield?
Not necessarily. Aftermarket glass that meets FMVSS 205 is legal and structurally compliant. Dealer OEM glass matters more when the car has a heads-up display, acoustic interlayer glass, a heated wiper park area or a camera bracket with tight tolerances. Ask the shop which applies to your car.
