Windshield Replacement Prices by Situation

Labor barely changes from one car to the next. The glass does. Find the row closest to your vehicle, then add the calibration line if there is a camera at the top of the windshield.

What Makes One Windshield Cost More Than Another

The glass part number sets most of the bill, and the part number follows the features built into the glass. Two trims of the same model year can sit on different rows of the table because of one bracket.

Rain sensor bracket

A windshield with a mount for a rain or light sensor is a different part number from the plain glass for the same model.

Camera bracket and ADAS

A forward camera behind the glass usually means a recalibration line on the bill, static in a bay, dynamic on the road, or both.

Acoustic interlayer

Glass with a sound-damping layer costs more and has to be matched, or the cabin gets louder at highway speed.

Heated wiper park

Heating elements along the bottom edge make it a separate, pricier part.

Heads-up display

A HUD windshield has a wedge-shaped interlayer so the projection does not double. This is where OEM glass matters most.

OEM or OEE glass

OEM glass carries the carmaker's logo; OEE glass is made to the same FMVSS 205 standard without it, and usually costs less.

ADAS camera calibration after windshield replacement: static calibration with a target board in a bay, or dynamic calibration on the road
Calibration is the line item most often missing from a cheap windshield replacement quote. Static calibration uses a target board in a level bay; dynamic calibration is a road drive at a set speed.
Ask for three lines

Glass (with the brand and part number), installation labor, and ADAS recalibration. A single lump sum is where the difference between two quotes hides. More on the camera side is on the ADAS calibration page.

OEM vs Aftermarket Glass, and Cheap Quotes

OEM glass comes in the carmaker's box with its logo. OEE, or aftermarket, glass is built to the same federal safety standard, FMVSS 205, without the logo. For most Memphis cars OEE glass is the sensible choice and the reason a quote lands near the bottom of the range.

OEM earns its price on a short list of vehicles: a heads-up display, an acoustic interlayer, a heated wiper park, or a camera bracket that must sit at exact factory geometry. On those, the wrong glass shows up as a doubled HUD image, extra wind noise or a camera that will not calibrate.

A cheap windshield replacement is fine when the saving is the glass brand. It is not fine when the saving is the work. The urethane needs a full bead and its drive-away cure, typically 30 to 60 minutes depending on the adhesive and the temperature, because the windshield is part of the roof's crush strength and backs up the passenger airbag. And a camera car that skips calibration is a cheaper job only until lane assist starts misreading the road.

If a quote will not name the glass brand going into your car, ask again or move on.

A 2019 SUV with a lane camera, cracked on I-40

An illustration, not a job record. A stone off a freight truck on I-40 starts a crack low in the passenger side that runs to the edge within a week of July heat, so repair is off the table. The SUV has a rain sensor and a forward camera.

  • Aftermarket glass and installationaround $299
  • Camera recalibration$100 to $300
  • Likely total, cashabout $400 to $600

With a $500 comprehensive deductible the owner pays roughly the same either way, so filing a claim buys little. With a full glass endorsement it would be $0.

Cash or Insurance: What You Actually Pay in Tennessee

Windshield replacement is not free in Tennessee. There is no state law waiving the glass deductible, so with comprehensive coverage you pay your deductible and the insurer pays the rest. The only dependable route to $0 is a full glass endorsement on the policy, roughly $30 to $60 a year. Chip repair is the exception most carriers make on their own, because a repair saves them a replacement.

Your policyOn a $299 replacement you pay
No comprehensive coverage$299, cash
$500 or $1,000 deductible$299, cash (do not file)
$250 deductible$250
$100 deductible$100
Full glass endorsement$0

Be wary of any shop that offers to cover your deductible. Under Tenn. Code Ann. 56-7-1114 it is unfair and deceptive for a glass shop to offer a credit, rebate or gift toward your deductible, or to advertise glass work as free when an insurer is paying, and 56-7-1115 lets your insurer demand proof you paid it.

Windshield Replacement Cost Questions

How much does windshield replacement cost in Memphis?
Windshield replacement in Memphis runs $176 to $767, and a standard vehicle with aftermarket glass and no camera comes in around $299. Add $100 to $300 if the car has a windshield camera that needs recalibration. Luxury vehicles and glass with a heads-up display, acoustic layer or heating can reach $500 to $1,500.
Is windshield replacement free in Tennessee?
No. Tennessee has no law requiring insurers to waive the glass deductible, unlike Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina. Your comprehensive deductible applies to a replacement unless your policy has a full glass endorsement, an add-on that costs roughly $30 to $60 a year. Tennessee law also bars glass shops from advertising a job as free when an insurer is paying.
Why do two quotes for the same car differ by hundreds of dollars?
Usually because they are for different glass. Two trims of the same model year can need different part numbers for a rain sensor, camera bracket, acoustic layer or heated wiper park. The other common gap is calibration: one quote includes it and the other leaves it off. Ask both shops for the part number and a three-line quote.
Is the cheapest windshield replacement in Memphis worth it?
It can be, if the low price comes from aftermarket glass that meets FMVSS 205 and the quote still includes a proper urethane bead, the drive-away cure time and any camera calibration your car needs. It is not worth it if the saving comes from skipping calibration or rushing the cure.
Should I pay cash or use insurance for a windshield replacement?
Compare your comprehensive deductible with the cash quote. With a $500 deductible and a $299 replacement, the claim pays nothing, so pay cash. With a $100 deductible, or a full glass endorsement, the claim is usually the better route.
